I came home last night, checked my box of Windsor brand table salt and found that, sure enough, it contains sugar. Sugar in salt. This news disturbs me for two reasons. First, I cook with this salt on occasion and I am not supposed to eat refined sugar (I can pretty much assure you the sugar in the salt is refined). The second reason this disturbs me is that I did not know that my salt contains sugar. I read labels all the time. Obsessively. When asked what I do for a living not long ago my son answered "She's the food police". Yet it never occurred to me to read the label on my box of salt. I am embarrassed. I am also getting new salt!
But enough about me. This tidbit about the sugar in the salt came up during the food label reading segment of the six week nutrition and lifestyle seminar series I am currently attending. The series is offered by Kitchener-Waterloo based Naturopathic Doctors Robin Walsh and Krystijana Rakic. Robin is the talented woman who helped my son with his food allergies and for that I will be forever grateful to her. In addition to being an absolute encyclopedia of information, Robin is a dynamic speaker. Krystijana is every bit as enthusiastic and like Robin, you can see that she is giving up her evenings to teach these seminars because she truly gives a damn.
Each two hour session breezes by filled with a combination of lecture, audience interaction and video clips plus a periodic stretch and a nutritious snack. The focus is food and lifestyle with just enough science thrown in to convince attendees this stuff is for real.
Both women have thriving private practices and its clear when they speak that they really are there to give people the tools to be healthy and able to enjoy life rather than just avoiding the onset of chronic illness. The seminar series is fittingly titled Vibrant Living Changing Lives One Lifestyle at a Time. New streams of the seminar are starting in the next couple of months so if you are in the Kitchener-Waterloo area I encourage you to check it out!
